ATM | Shaping the Future: The Vital Role of Teachers in the Foothills School Division

ATm-20250331

Our future is created by the young people in our classrooms today, fostered by educators invested in the pursuit of their potential, and nurtured by the same community that will be the beneficiary of their success.

Foothills School Division 2024 – 2029 Education Plan

In the foothills of Alberta, the Foothills School Division (FSD) is home to a community dedicated to shaping the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders. At the forefront of this mission are FSD’s teachers, who play a crucial role in fostering safe, welcoming, respectful, and inclusive learning environments. These spaces are the foundation for student engagement, support, and success—cornerstones of FSD’s educational vision.

FSD educators go beyond delivering curriculum; they build relationships that make every student feel valued and respected. They embrace the diversity of the division’s learners, tailoring their approaches to meet a wide range of needs, interests, and cultural backgrounds. This commitment ensures that each student has the opportunity to thrive, supported by a collaborative network that includes families, professionals, and the community.

The Foothills School Division Board of Trustees demonstrates unwavering support for its teachers and deeply values professional learning. By prioritizing high-quality opportunities for professional growth, the Board ensures educators have the tools and resources they need to excel. This steadfast dedication strengthens classroom practices and reinforces a culture of continuous improvement across the division.

Professional growth remains a priority within FSD. Teachers continuously engage in professional development, reflective practices, and team collaboration, honing their craft to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Data-informed strategies allow them to personalize learning, ensuring optimal outcomes for all students. This culture of continuous improvement elevates teaching practices and enriches student experiences.

The Teaching Quality Standard in Alberta provides a solid foundation for FSD’s educators, guiding them to meet high standards of excellence. The division is committed to fostering environments where there is a Place for ALL so that all students can excel.

School Leaders (Principals and Vice-Principals) play a crucial role in implementing professional growth, supervision, and evaluation processes to ensure that all teachers meet the Teaching Quality Standard. By fostering a collaborative and growth-minded approach, school leaders create an environment where continuous improvement is not only encouraged but expected. They provide guidance and support to teachers, helping them to reflect on their practices, set goals, and engage in meaningful professional development. Through regular supervision and constructive feedback, school leaders ensure that teachers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality education to all students. This collaborative effort between school leaders and teachers is essential in maintaining a high standard of teaching and fostering a culture of excellence within the division.

In the Foothills School Division, success is measurable. Improved student achievement, enhanced educator collaboration, and evidence-based progress are hallmarks of the division’s impact. By cultivating dynamic, inclusive, and engaging learning spaces, FSD teachers not only transform classrooms but also shape the future of their communities.

Together with families and community members, FSD’s educators lay the groundwork for a future where every student can succeed. By fostering a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and high professional standards, the Foothills School Division holds space for its students – and all who support them- to flourish. This collective dedication builds a legacy of opportunity, innovation, and progress, ensuring that education continues to light the way for all.
